A Charge To Keep

Written by Steve Chicka on 8/22/1983. Written for the 25th anniversary of the Westbrooke Wesleyan Church, dedicated to those loyal members who have gone on to be with their Lord.

We sometimes ponder over the swift passing years,
Especially as we all, too soon, grow older.
Sometimes those fleeting years increase our fears,
Time, thou, does not wait on the beholder.
But as we look back over the sands of time,
Rembering those outstanding events of the past,
Old memories and places bring back joy sublime,
Of a people firmly committed with a goal steadfast,
Knowing His command for a church to rise,
Enabling other to seek His heavenly prize.

We fondly look back at those church founders,
Especially those who have gone on to their reward.
Serving so unselfishly and faithfully, it is no wonder,
Life is meaningless without the Lord.
Each in his own special way left something for us to remember.
Yet more surprising, they did not seek earthly aclaim.
A higher goad of service to their fellow member,
Not for self, that was their goal and aim.

Churches are established by mortals such as these -
Heavenly portals, their everlasting reward shall be.
Unbound faith and prayer on bended knees,
Recieving His blessings and love so profusely.
Confident that He will always be there to meet our daily needs.
Hands ourstretched, lest we fall, ever watching as upwards he leads.

And so as we pass this quarter-century mark,
Which is but a fleeting second in God's time,
May this church be as a beacon in the dark,
Spreading His word to all with love sublime.
So that future generations may truthfully say,
This church was built on a solid rock,
Whose people chose the straight and narrow way,
Looking and trusting in His guidance in their life's walk.
